The judge failed to follow the law and demonstrated a lack of professional competence in the law when he magistrated his grandson. Although the judge was not similarly disqualified from magistrating a friend of the judge's grandson, a material fact witness in the case involving the grandson, the fact that the grandson's father contacted the judge on behalf of the material fact witness created a perception that the judge was providing special or favorable treatment to family and friends.
